Facts about Bees

Yesterday we met a beekeeper, Mr. Jones, and he taught us a lot about bees. Today we worked with a small group to write our information down on big chart paper. We learned so many different things about bees and wasps too. Here are some pictures of us working with our groups.

New Math Game

Today we played a new math game called Ten More. We roll two dice and then make a number based on the dots on the dice. For example, if we roll a four and a five then we make the number 45. We then add 10 to that number. Then we put a coloured chip on that number on the game board. The first person to get four in a row wins the game.

Our Visit with a Beekeeper

Today a beekeeper, Mr. Jones, came to our school to teach us all about honeybees. We learned all about bees. We learned how they pollinate flowers. We learned about their enemies. Did you know that skunks eat bees? Wasps are also enemies to bees. We learned that wasps and bees are very different. We investigated different hives, honeycomb and bees. We learned that every year the Queen bee gets painted. This year, she has a green dot. We tried on the beekeeper suit. We even tried different kinds of honey. At the end of the presentation we learned how bees communicate with each other. We pretended that we were bees and we did the bee dance. Mr. Jones hid a bag of jelly beans and we had to watch our friends do the bee dance so that we could figure out where the jellybeans were.

Using a Wordless Book Sea Of Dreams to encourage writing

Today we had a great time writing our own sentences to go with the pictures from Sea of Dreams. We were so excited to come up with our sentences and share them with our classmates. Using the whiteboards worked well because we could easily edit our work. We edited our work for capitals, punctuation and interesting words. The only problem that we found was that we needed more board space. Two sides wasn't long enough for us. We had so much to write. Next time maybe we will use paper.
