Reading to Self

We like to read to ourselves after lunch.  Yesterday we tried something new and read out in the hall.  Ms. Leech went around and videotaped us reading.  Then today we read in the classroom again.  We can read anywhere as long as we read to ourselves.  There are 3 ways that we can read the book: read the pictures, read the words, and retell the story.

Learning Together

We like to work together to learn new things.  Sometimes we work in partners, sometimes in groups, and sometimes with our big buddies.

Can you guess what number we were learning about?

Numbers, numbers, numbers... we have been learning how to correctly print the numerals as well as different ways to show the numbers.  We have been exploring different ways to represent the various numbers and we have gotten quite creative by using manipulatives and the iPads.  Here is a video showing our creativity.  Can you guess the number?

Daily 5

In September we started learning about Daily 5.  We started with Read to Self, then Read to Someone, then Word Work and then Work on Writing.  We use a red chart and Ms. Leech picks the order that we do our activities in.  Some of us Work on Writing while some of us are reading or working with our sight words.  We are learning to be independent during these activities.  We are learning to focus and work while others are doing different things around us.  We can work on the carpet, at a table or on our desks.

Fall Leaves

Last week while on our daily run we decided that each time we ran a lap around the gravel field we would pick up a leaf.  When the run was over we counted the leaves to see how many laps each of us ran.  We then brought the leaves inside and measured them, compared them, described them, traced them and did leaf rubbings.
We had a great time observing and measuring the leaves.

The Number 3

On Friday the grade ones were practising printing the number 3.  When they were finished printing they got an ipad and searched the classroom to take pictures of things that represented the number 3.  They had a great time moving objects around to make sets of 3.

One Morning

This morning I decided to try to film morning activities and then make a 60 second movie using the video clips. We started our day with Family Reading, then a Google Hangout to read Charlotte's Web and then Language Arts activities. There were so many clips to choose from so my movie is 110 seconds instead of 60. I hope that you enjoy a peak into our classroom!

Our Classroom

This week when we went on on one of our Primary Blogging sites, First Grade O.W.L.S, we saw pictures of their classroom.  We decided that we wanted to show our classroom too so some of us took pictures of our classroom using the ipads.  Ms. Leech then took the ipads home and used our pictures as well as some that she took to make an imovie about our classroom.
We are now wondering what our other Primary Blogging friends classrooms look like?

Word Work

We are practising our spelling words every day using different materials to help us learn them.  We build them with cards and magnetic letters.  We stamp the words.  We write the words on the white board and we use the ipads.  We also use the SmartBoard.  We call this Word Work.  It is part of our Daily 5.
Writing the words on the whiteboard.

We love writing on the SmartBoard.
